Choosing a belt when the trouser waist fits
Once support is no longer the main problem, choose the belt for proportion and use.

The belt does not have to rescue the trousers
When trousers already sit comfortably, a belt becomes a choice rather than an emergency fastening. You may want its visual line, a place to anchor a tucked shirt’s composition or simply the familiarity of wearing one. You can also leave it out if the trousers remain secure and the empty loops do not bother you.
Fasten the trousers first and move normally before choosing belt tension. Pulling a well-fitting waist much tighter can gather fabric and distort pockets. A belt should not create the very bunching that the correct trouser size avoided. If support is still essential, reassess whether the waist fit is as good as it initially seemed.
Match width and buckle to the garment
Check the belt through the actual loops. It should slide without forcing or twisting, and the buckle should not crowd the front fastening. A thick casual belt can look and feel awkward on lightweight tailored trousers even when it technically fits through the loops.
Consider the visible scale. A narrow understated buckle gives a different effect from a broad metal frame. Look at the outfit at normal distance with the shirt tucked as intended. The belt need not precisely match the shoes, but its finish should make sense with the overall level of formality. A smooth dark belt and textured brown shoes can coexist without requiring another purchase.
Use the adjustment range
Try the belt with the trousers at their normal height and, if relevant, with a tucked layer. There should be useful adjustment in both directions rather than the buckle relying on the very last hole. Check that the free end sits neatly in the keeper instead of extending far around the waist.
A different trouser rise can change the belt length you need, so do not assume one labelled size works everywhere. Before shortening a belt or adding holes, check its construction and ask the maker or a suitable repairer. If the belt contributes nothing to comfort or the appearance you want, leaving it off is a complete decision, not an outfit missing a compulsory accessory.
