Transitioning summer shirts into autumn
Keep the shirts that layer comfortably and let the rest remain seasonal.

Assess the shirt rather than the calendar
A summer shirt does not become unusable on a particular date. Its usefulness changes with the conditions and the layers around it. A light long-sleeved shirt may fit easily under a cardigan, while a very loose short-sleeved shirt can bunch inside a narrow jacket. Try the actual combination instead of assuming every warm-weather garment can be carried into autumn in the same way.
Look at the colour and pattern too. A pale blue shirt is easy to place beside darker trousers, while a large holiday print may remain a stronger statement. That does not make the print forbidden. Decide whether you still enjoy it in the new setting rather than trying to conceal it under enough layers to make it disappear.
Change the frame around it
A light shirt with corduroy trousers and a plain jacket has a different feel from the same shirt with shorts. The lower half can supply much of the seasonal change. Choose a trouser texture that relates to the outer layer without making everything heavy. A fine shirt can provide a useful contrast beside more substantial cloth.
A cardigan or open overshirt can frame the shirt, but two collars may compete. Set both naturally and check whether one keeps pushing the other out of place. Sometimes a crew-neck knit is the simpler companion. If the shirt has a bulky camp collar, forcing it under a narrow neckline may be less successful than wearing it beneath an open jacket.
Check sleeves and hems together
Short sleeves can roll inside another garment, while long shirt tails can emerge unevenly beneath a knit. These are fitting questions, not reasons to reject the whole category. Try tucking the shirt or choosing a different outer length. Make sure you can remove the top layer without needing several minutes to reconstruct the shirt underneath.
Keep expectations realistic. A very airy shirt may remain useful indoors but not provide the warmth you want outside. Add suitable layers rather than attributing new properties to the fabric. If a shirt only works with your summer shoes and no autumn combination feels comfortable, it is fine to store it until needed again. A wardrobe does not become more versatile by forcing every piece to work all year.
