Linen trousers with closed shoes
A summer trouser does not need an open shoe, but the weight and hem deserve attention.

Treat the trousers as a particular garment
Linen trousers vary in width, weight and finish. A crisp tailored pair and a loose drawstring version do not ask for the same shoe simply because both contain linen. Start with the trouser shape. A straighter, more structured pair can sit comfortably over a loafer or simple lace-up, while a relaxed pair may suit a restrained trainer.
Look at the hem while wearing the shoes. Light fabric can collect on the upper rather than falling past it. A small adjustment in length may make the combination clearer. Do not automatically crop the trousers high; the aim is to avoid unintended pooling, not to expose an exact amount of ankle.
Match the visual weight
A very heavy sole beneath thin pale trousers creates a strong contrast. That can be intentional, but a lighter-looking shoe may make an easier first combination. The shoe need not be delicate. A simple shape with limited hardware often lets the fabric remain the focus, whereas a highly polished formal design can make a drawstring waist feel disconnected.
Brown suede, dark leather or plain white trainers offer different directions. Choose according to the setting and the rest of the outfit, not an assumption that linen always means holiday clothing. With a shirt tucked in, a loafer may feel coherent; with a relaxed T-shirt, a simple trainer may be more familiar. Both still depend on the actual trouser cut.
Include the socks in the decision
Visible socks are possible, especially when their colour connects to the trousers or shoes. If you prefer a bare-ankle appearance, use socks that fit securely and remain comfortable rather than assuming no socks is the only option. Check the seated view, since the hem rises and reveals more of the transition than the standing mirror does.
The top should support the same level of ease. A light shirt, knitted polo or plain T-shirt can work, while a heavy upper layer may make the outfit feel seasonally confused unless the weather genuinely calls for it. Accept the fabric's visible texture and ordinary creasing as part of the garment you chose. Closed shoes do not require the trousers to imitate a perfectly pressed formal suit.
