Swim shorts with a linen shirt
Balance a relaxed shirt with the length and volume of your swim shorts when you are out of the water.

Choose the shirt for the moment
A linen shirt can provide a light additional layer over swim shorts while you move between the beach, changing area and nearby accommodation. Choose a shirt you are comfortable using in that setting rather than assuming every fine linen garment belongs beside water. Sand, sun cream and a damp waistband can affect how the fabric looks. A favourite formal shirt may be less useful here than an uncomplicated washable piece whose care instructions suit the trip.
This combination is for time outside the water. Remove ordinary clothing before activities for which it is unsuitable, and follow local rules. A linen shirt is also not automatically a garment with a verified sun-protection rating. Use appropriate protection for the conditions rather than making assumptions from the amount of skin covered or the apparent density of a photograph.
Look at the two hems together
A very long shirt can hide almost all of a short pair of swim shorts. That may be a deliberate preference, but check the result while seated as well as standing. A shirt that ends higher creates a clearer separation between the two pieces. You do not need a precise formula; you need enough visible proportion to feel comfortable in the places where you intend to wear it.
An open shirt gives the outfit a different outline from a buttoned one. If you wear it closed, leave comfortable room through the body and avoid pulling the hem tight around the shorts. A straight or gently curved casual hem usually looks more settled untucked than long formal tails. Roll the sleeves loosely if desired, but avoid forcing a heavy roll that makes a light shirt feel awkward.
Keep the remaining choices straightforward
With patterned shorts, a plain shirt allows the pattern to remain the main detail. With plain shorts, a stripe can add variation without requiring extra accessories. The colours need not match exactly: off-white with blue, or a muted shirt with darker shorts, provides an easy distinction. Choose footwear appropriate for the ground and destination, not solely for how it looks beside bare ankles.
Let wet swimwear dry and follow both garments' care instructions before packing them away. Do not leave a damp shirt bundled around the shorts simply because they were worn together. Keep a separate change available if your plans move beyond the poolside setting. A good combination works for a particular part of the day without having to serve every occasion on the itinerary.
