Swim shorts that fit at the waist
A secure waistband should work without being pulled tight enough to distort the whole garment.

Separate waist fit from leg shape
Swim shorts can fit at the waist and still have a leg shape you dislike, or look right through the leg while slipping at the top. Treat those as separate questions. Begin with the size guidance for the model, then assess the waistband and the available movement. Choosing a smaller size only to shorten the leg can create pressure where you need comfort.
Stand, sit and bend during the fitting while following the retailer's hygiene rules. The waistband should remain located without needing constant attention. An elastic section and a drawstring do different jobs: elasticity accommodates movement, while a cord allows adjustment. Pulling the cord as tightly as possible is not evidence that the size is correct.
Check the closure before relying on it
Look at how the drawstring runs through the waistband and whether the fastening is straightforward for you to use. A decorative-looking cord is not necessarily the only closure, so read the product description. If there is a fly or another fastening, check it too. The complete construction matters more than one visible feature in a product photograph.
Consider the activities you intend to do. Sitting beside a pool, casual swimming and more active water use may call for different features. Follow the maker's guidance for intended use, and do not infer suitability from the name swim shorts alone. This is a clothing fit decision, not a substitute for appropriate equipment where a particular activity requires it.
Notice the lining and pockets
The lining should feel comfortable and allow movement without bunching. Different constructions suit different preferences, so do not assume that one type is universally better. If a seam or edge is already uncomfortable during a careful fitting, pay attention to that signal. It is unwise to buy several pairs on the promise that the irritation will certainly disappear.
Pockets can change the outline and hold unwanted items when you enter the water. Before swimming, empty them and secure belongings elsewhere. A zipped pocket is not automatically waterproof. Do not place a phone or other vulnerable object inside simply because the fastening appears substantial. Check the actual product information for any specific protective claim.
Choose the visible proportion last
Once the waist and movement work, consider length. A shorter leg and a longer one each create a different balance with your torso and the shirt you may wear outside the water. There is no universal flattering point for everyone. Look at the actual garment, including the width of its opening, rather than deciding from length alone.
A plain pair can combine easily with several shirts, while a strong print becomes a main detail. Neither needs to match the rest of your holiday clothing exactly. Think about whether the shorts will be worn only for swimming or also while moving between changing facilities and the beach. That helps you choose the level of coverage you personally want.
After use, follow the care label for rinsing, washing and drying. Do not pack wet shorts tightly against clean clothes for longer than necessary. Allow them to dry before ordinary storage. Good fit and suitable care are more useful than a large collection of pairs whose waistbands or seams never quite work for you.
