Pleated trousers with a simple top
Let the extra room at the front work with the waistband, rather than treating pleats as decoration alone.

Watch the pleats while standing normally
Pleats introduce cloth near the waist that can open as the body moves. Their appearance depends on the cut around them. If they are already pulled wide apart while you stand naturally, the trousers may be too tight through the upper body or may sit at the wrong height for their design. Do not assess them while holding your stomach in or pulling the waistband upward by hand.
Try sitting and standing, then leave the fabric alone for a moment. The front does not have to return to a perfectly pressed photograph, but it should settle in a way you like. Pocket openings, rise and thigh room all contribute. A correct waist measurement does not guarantee that the rest of the trouser has the space it needs.
Show enough of the waistband
A simple T-shirt, fine knit or plain shirt allows the front of the trousers to remain visible. Tucking the top is one option, especially with a higher rise. A shorter untucked top can also work. The aim is not to display every pleat at all times, but to avoid hiding the feature you chose beneath an unexpectedly long layer.
If you tuck, smooth the fabric once and check the sides. Too much material gathered above the waistband can compete with the volume already present in the trousers. A slightly shorter or less bulky top may help more than a tighter belt. The belt itself can be plain; the trouser front already supplies detail.
Follow the leg to the shoe
Pleated trousers can be tapered, straight or wide. Do not assume the pleats determine the whole silhouette. A fuller leg may need a different hem length from a narrow one, and a small shoe can look different beneath each. Try your actual footwear and look from the side as well as the front.
For an uncomplicated first outfit, combine a dark pleated trouser with a pale plain top and simple shoes. Add a jacket only after the base works. You may find that the trousers already make the outfit feel considered. Extra pattern, a conspicuous belt and several accessories are possibilities, not obligations created by choosing a more detailed cut.
