Outfits

Black jeans with a grey knit

Use texture and proportion to keep a two-colour outfit from becoming flat.

A grey knit with dark jeans

Decide how much contrast you want

A pale grey jumper makes a clear block above black jeans. Charcoal creates a closer, quieter pairing. Neither is more correct: the useful question is whether you want the top to stand apart or the outfit to read as one dark shape. Check the colours in daylight, because an indoor bulb can make a cool grey seem warmer than it is.

Texture prevents the combination from feeling blank. A visible knit against relatively smooth denim provides enough variation without adding a pattern. If the jumper is very chunky, give the jeans some room through the leg. A large upper half balanced on extremely tight ankles can look more deliberate than comfortable, especially once a heavy coat goes over it.

Watch the waistband and hem

A ribbed jumper hem that grips tightly may balloon above the waist. Pulling it down repeatedly will not change that construction. Try allowing it to sit where it naturally settles, or choose a straighter hem. With longer knitwear, check the side view: the fabric should not catch on back pockets or make the jeans look lower than they really sit.

The black denim does not need to be perfectly unfaded. Some wear can soften the outfit, but decide whether you like the actual wash rather than treating all black jeans as interchangeable. Strong grey fading at the thighs adds a second focal point below an already textured jumper. A more even finish gives the knit greater prominence.

Two useful ways to finish

For a quiet version, use black shoes and dark socks. The trouser leg then continues without a strong interruption. White trainers produce a more graphic finish and echo any white T-shirt visible at the neckline, although that echo is optional. Brown boots can work as a warmer accent if their shape suits the leg opening.

A coat in navy, olive or camel introduces colour without changing the core combination. If you prefer to stay monochrome, vary the surface rather than collecting nearly matching greys. A smooth black coat over a textured grey knit gives each layer a purpose. Before leaving, remove lint from the dark denim and check that the jumper is not clinging to the shirt underneath.
