An outfit for dinner without a dress code
Use the restaurant and the evening's plans as clues, not an imaginary rulebook.

Find a middle ground
When a restaurant gives no clothing guidance, a shirt or knit with well-fitting trousers is a useful middle position. It is easier to relax that combination than to make a very casual outfit feel formal after arriving. This does not mean every dinner requires a blazer. The venue, company and occasion can all point towards a simpler choice.
Look at ordinary photographs of the room and consider whether you will sit at a bar, on a terrace or at a long dinner table. These details affect layers and comfort more directly than a decorative description of the restaurant. If there is a special event or private booking, ask the organiser rather than assuming the normal atmosphere applies.
Plan for sitting
Dinner clothes spend much of their time in a chair. Check the trouser waist after sitting, and make sure the shirt does not pull sharply across the stomach or chest. A relaxed fit can still look tidy. A garment that only hangs smoothly when you hold a particular posture will need more attention than the evening deserves.
Choose sleeves that stay clear of the table without elaborate folding. If you prefer a knit, a manageable cuff and a neckline you like without another layer are useful. With an open-neck shirt, check the collar beneath your jacket before leaving. There is no need to keep an extra button fastened simply because the shirt looks more formal that way on a hanger.
Keep the transition simple
Dark trousers with a pale shirt and brown shoes can feel considered without being ceremonial. A charcoal knit with black jeans offers a quieter alternative where denim is appropriate. Avoid introducing several unfamiliar pieces at once. The shoes you know are comfortable are usually a better choice than a new pair bought only for this reservation.
Take outerwear that suits the journey and can be managed at the venue. A coat does not need to remain part of the outfit once you sit down. Empty unnecessary pocket contents before leaving, and carry a small bag if required. The final check is ordinary: clean clothes, comfortable fit, appropriate footwear and enough warmth for the trip home. Beyond that, let dinner remain the main event.
