A simple outfit for a gallery visit
Leave room for walking, standing and looking rather than trying to dress as part of the exhibition.

The visit sets the requirements
A daytime gallery visit is usually a question of comfort and personal style rather than a special costume. You may spend more time standing than expected, so choose shoes that suit that activity. If the visit includes a private opening or an evening event, check the invitation separately. The requirements of an event are not necessarily those of the building on an ordinary afternoon.
A plain knit or shirt with straight trousers provides an uncomplicated starting point. Keep enough room at the shoulders to remove a jacket comfortably, and avoid an outfit that depends on carrying the coat rather than wearing it. You may be outdoors between venues even if most of the visit is inside.
Let one element carry the interest
If you enjoy colour, a rust jumper with navy trousers can be enough. If you prefer neutrals, a textured grey shirt beside dark trousers creates variation without a pattern. There is no obligation to wear black or to make an outfit visibly artistic. Choose something you would still like in a café after the visit, not only against a white gallery wall.
Pay attention to proportions when you add a bag. A large tote can overwhelm a compact jacket, while a small cross-body bag may sit awkwardly across an open collar. Test the actual arrangement at home. The bag should carry what you need without repeatedly swinging into your arm or requiring you to hold it in a particular position.
Keep practical details quiet
Check the venue's bag and cloakroom information if you plan to carry more than a small daily bag. Do not assume that a large backpack will be welcome in every exhibition space. A removable layer is useful if indoor and outdoor temperatures differ, but only if you have somewhere manageable to put it after taking it off.
Finish with clothes that remain comfortable when you pause, turn and walk slowly. Heavy accessories, noisy hardware and shoes that need breaking in can become more noticeable in a quiet room. A gallery outfit need not explain your taste in art. It only needs to let you enjoy the visit without spending the afternoon arranging your own clothes.
